Fall Tea Party

There’s just something magical about the fall. My best friend and I have been getting gitty over the fall season for as long as I can remember! There is always a meme or two in our text thread on the first day of fall, it’s usually something like a person running through a field of pumpkins or dancing in the leaves. This year, I when I suggested that we have a fall tea party, she responded enthusiastically, “Yes!!! We should!!!” Having special traditions with the anticipation it brings, and the beautiful memories to cherish is always worth the effort.

My boys were so excited to go to the “party” that they even decided they wanted to get dressed up, so we pulled out the suspenders and bow ties that they wore at my sister’s wedding years ago. They were absolutely adorable! We baked pumpkin cookies, and cinnamon twists, and got some fruit and little frozen quiches at the grocery store, and of course had an assortment of tea. We laid out a quilt for the kids to play on with fall books, fall coloring pages, and musical instruments. They had so much fun making music and talking about their favorite things about fall. This will absolutely be the first of many fall tea parties! I hope it’s a tradition that my kids remember fondly and that they get that same gitty feeling when the seasons change no matter how old they get.

If you would like to start your own tea party tradition here’s a few tips:

Keep it Simple: You really don’t need a lot to make it special and memorable, but you want it to be a little fancier than a normal every day meal, that’s what makes it fun. I made some of the food from scratch, and I bought some of the food, you can do whatever you have the time and capacity for. My kids love baking, so that was part of the fun for them, but maybe you don’t like baking at your house, that’s ok, go grab some fall treats at the grocery store or bakery.

Shop at the Thrift Store: If you know me, you know I love the thrift store! I find so many unique pieces there for my home, and the majority of my wardrobe comes from there! If you don’t have tea cups or a tablecloth, go search at the thrift store. And can I tell you a secret? It doesn’t all have to match! yay! You can mix and match cups and patterns or have everyone pick out their own special cup that reflects their own personality.

Use Nature: You guys, there is so much beauty around us right now. Don’t worry about getting fancy with décor. Go on a nature walk and collect some leaves, or acorns, or cut some of the wild grasses growing out on a trail. The flowers on our table were literally something we found in the field behind our house! Collecting little treasures to display on the big day is part of the fun!

Literature and Art: I love having beautiful books or poems to read during our tea parties. You could include anything you like, hymns, folk songs, display and discuss an art piece, you can even do a recreation of the art or a fun fall art project. It’s a really neat way to bring culture to your event, and if there is food, the kids will sit and listen, right?! My favorite fall book for kids is Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, it is the sweetest story and has beautiful water color pictures, see if you can find it at the library, or buy it and build your own seasonal collection.
